When made from cotton tiedye or batik, these African dresses can be worn to school, church, or office. The dresses made of handwoven African cloth can be worn as evening wear. Traditional African wedding dresses (Yoruba) are made from the hand woven African cloth. Today many brides prefer to have a "white wedding." Those brides and their bridesmaids and guests usually wear the dresses of handwoven cloth to the wedding reception or wedding party.
This section features the traditional African dresses worn by Yoruba women of West African. These African dresses flatter women from size small to plus size. Most dresses in this section were dyed or handwoven by Yoruba dyers or weavers and sewn by Yoruba tailors.
The style of African dress consists of 4 parts. The blouse (buba) slips over the head and can be worn inside or outside of the wrapper (skirt). The blouse is loose fitting and often has long sleeves. The wrapper (skirt) is a piece of cloth about 2 1/2 feet long which is wrapped around the waist and laps in the back. It can be worn at almost any length. Although most Yoruba women wear their wrappers without strings, we've added strings to most of ours so the wrapper can be securely tied around the waist. The headtie is a piece of cloth that can be tied in a variety of ways. With traditional African clothing, women wear headties, not hats. Headties come in a variety of sizes. Some can be used as scarves. The shawl is used for evening wear, and dressy and special occasions. The shawl is worn as part of the traditional African wedding dress. It can be draped over the left shoulder or wrapped around the waist over the wrapper.
